Sci-Fi Valley Con Pt 8 - 2019 : A Weekend In A Blog
First and foremost, let me state that I am my own voice on this blog and Sci-Fi Valley Con did not ask me to give this review. This is my own voice in this.
This was my second year volunteering at Sci-Fi Valley Con. Those who are unaware of this con it's located at the Blair County Convention Center in Altoona, PA and it is by far one of the most amazing conventions I've attended. I've only attended a small few but this one is organized, put together, and even in the middle of chaos, runs so smoothly. The owner, Casey, is an amazing guy and really friendly and you will seeing him roaming around the con and even socializing with the attendees, vender's, artists, and celebrity guests. All the staff has become family and we all work together and get along (at least I feel that we do) really great together.
So let's get down to it. This year was, again, my second year volunteering there. Last year I didn't get a chance to write a blog about it because I didn't start my blog when that came around, and the first review I did on a convention was ThyGeekdom Con. This year I get to brag about how AMAZING this convention is though. This year we had an amazing celebrity guest selection to meet and I got to meet Rob Paulsen last year which was an amazing moment, and we got a picture of him and my son last year in which we got to give him that gift, an autograph, and a new picture (which I will explain that in a moment in a different paragraph). The convention is also set up really well. It's two floors and despite the large crowds the flow is really well and it doesn't get overwhelming (except in a few areas but that is common). All your vender's are positioned on the top floor with the artists on the bottom (and some vender's) with the celebrity guests and photo op area.
I've met so many awesome people there, made some awesome friends, and have gotten to know a few celebrities on a personal level. Last year I met the amazing Tracie Thoms and the Invader Zim cast but this year I got to meet Rob Paulsen (once more) and Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and the Brain), Seth Gilliam (Father Gabriel), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), and Billy West (Doug) who were some of my favorites to meet. I, sadly, have not watched a single episode of Supernatural but Mark Pellegrino is in Far Cry 5 and Dexter so I was excited to meet him, and I shook his beautiful hand (no regrets there on saying that, judge me). I also received a hug from Seth Gilliam which made me melt inside. My son has had a beautiful experience with Rob Paulsen, and I said I would explain this.
Last year my son had just turned four and didn't get the full concept that Mr. Rob Paulsen was the voice behind one of his favorite TMNT, and we introduced him to Pinky and the Brain as well as the Animaniacs. We got pictures with Rob Paulsen last year and so this year we printed out two of them and got one signed for our son for him to grow up with and we gave one to Rob Paulsen. However, we captured this sweet moment. We took to Twitter to thank him and in return, Rob also shared this moment on his social media.
The celebrities at the convention handle kids so amazing. The staff at the convention handle kids so amazing as well.
Lets get back to what the convention is all about. There is something ran by Gearbox Union called Con Quest and it is a blast. If I remember correctly, don't hold me to this, it's $10 for a weekend fun filled quest. You go to vender's and artists who participate in this and they give you different things to do that are crazy and exciting. We get a lot of laughs out of it and watch our kids do these funny things, some we help with and even wish we could steal the spotlight on. That money is raised for (and this is going to sound awful) something that I HONESTLY cannot remember right now but I do know it is for a good cause and we try to play as much as we can because we know the money goes to something amazing. I really could have remembered what it was for if I had wrote this over the weekend and then threw this giant blog together today but I was all over the place this weekend. I promise to have a more organized review next year.
There is honestly just SO much at this convention and it has such an amazing atmosphere and you'll feel right at home. It's a home away from home for me there and I will be there every year I can to volunteer and I honestly am considering setting up an artist table next year (which by the way, the prices are AMAZING for buying a table). The admission prices are also really amazing for the three days and my girlfriend always buys the three day passes. Seriously, jump on over to Sci-Fi Valley Con and check out their website for all sorts of cool information and there is also a new con they are holding last year that I CANNOT wait to attend and that is Momento Con, which you can click on that to check out that website as well and if you are near Altoona or Pittsburg for these conventions, because I promise you that Momento Con will be just as awesome being ran by Casey (because he is amazing). The cosplay is beautiful, the atmosphere is amazing, people are friendly, and you'll find some pretty amazing stuff there, too.
Basically to sum it up, you need to take your ass to Sci-Fi Valley Con and Momento Con next year!
